Midterm and Long-term Target Setting
Hence the Paris Agreement entered into force , which requires to limit global temperature increase below 2℃ compared to the pre-industrial temperature, activities to realize a post-carbon society have been accelerating globally.
There are many social problems around the world such as water risks and marine plastic problems.
ROHM Group considers these social issues as our own issues and setting medium- to long-term goals for 2030 and 2050.
For reduction of greenhouse gases, we are working on examining specific target values to set science based targets (SBTs).

- ROHM Hamamatsu introduced a solar power system in fiscal year 2017 and set up solar panels on the south side of the factory parallel to the Shinkansen Bullet Train tracks for a total length of 270 meters; this power system can generate approximately 363 MWh of electricity annually.
(In 2020, we are planning to introduce renewable energy at our site in Malaysia.)
In fiscal year 2019, we started purchasing electricity from renewable energy sources (hydropower and geothermal) at our site in Fukuoka, and plan to supply 50% of the energy required for operation with renewable energy in 2020.
ROHM Group is furthermore considering the introduction of renewable energy to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and avoid exhausting limited resources.

Reduce Global Greenhouse Gas Emission (PFCs, SF6, and etc)
PFC gas is a material essential for fine processing of semiconductors, especially Ics. This PFC gas will turn to a greenhouse gas that produces greenhouse effect 6,500 times as high as CO₂ when it is released into the atmosphere. The semiconductor industry has determined a target for reduction in the PFC gas emission and promoted the installation of PFC gas treatment systems used to dissolve PFC gases and eliminate the greenhouse effect.

Reducing Waste
Throughout the flow of its business activities, from procurement of materials to development, production and sales, ROHM Group strives to eliminate the wasteful use of finite resources and energy, reduce waste, and promote recycling. Toward this end, led by the Resources Use Expert Sub-Committee, it sets targets and formulates implementation plans for each year, and pursues related activities. We are also continuing to achieve zero emissions.
Fiscal Year 2019

-
- Waste generation (per production unit) in domestic group consolidated in FY2019 was increased by 2.1% from the actual results of FY2018. *Increases within 5% are considered "Maintain".
- Waste generation (per production unit) in overseas consolidated in FY2019 was reduced by 16.8% from the actual result of FY2018.

Water Consumption
ROHM group expands the semiconductor wafer manufacturing consumes a large amount of water in domestic and overseas.
The raw water input for semiconductor manufacturing is high cost resources used after processing hyper pure water, so it is necessary to not disposable but recycle or reuse for water-saving efforts.
We consider it is obvious that reducing input of limited water is friendly to environment, and reducing risk of business continuity can be possible if water-saving measure works even if water shortage is happen by climate change.
Fiscal Year 2019
- Targets
- Reduce water input volume (per production unit) in FY2019 to below the actual results of FY2018.
- Results
- Water input volume (per production unit) in FY2019 was increased by 5.2% from the actual results of FY2018.

TOPICS.
- Water Risk Correspondence
- The semi-conductor manufacturing process, which is one of ROHM Group's business areas, consists of an upstream process (semi-conductor wafer process) and downstream processes (assembly and final product inspection). The upstream process is located in Japan, and the downstream processes are located in our Southeast Asia, South Korea, and China plants. The manufacture of semi-conductors is an industry that requires the use of large volumes of ultra-pure water. The vast majority of those resources are used in the upstream process. For this reason, securing a long-term, stable supply of water in Japan, where the upstream process is concentrated, is an essential prerequisite for the continuation of operations.
Further, in Southeast Asia, where most of the downstream processes are concentrated, the two plants in Thailand are located in catchments with a high risk of flood and other water damage. From the bitter past experience of having operations disrupted by actual damage from a flood disaster, we conduct risk management from the dual aspects of water shortages and flood risk.

Material Balances for 3 Years
ROHM Group extracts the inputs of resources and energy for business activities, including procurement of raw materials, manufacturing, and transportation of products, as well as outputs of greenhouse gases, industrial wastes, and other related elements, and then analyzes the environmental burdens, leading to emission reduction activities.

- Approaches to Environmental Communications
- ROHM Group promotes environmental awareness-raising activities to deepen individual employees' understanding of the connections between the global environment and Rohm's business activities, and the implementation of environmental activities. The Group is also strengthening its ties to the local communities through a variety of activities.
Approaches in "Environmental Education"
Rank-based Environmental Education
To train employees in considering their living environment and the global environment, we have implemented education based on the rank of employees to teach how their respective work is related to the environment and how important the environmental management system is, through training for new employees and rank-based training.

Environmental Education for Employees at Overseas Sales Locations
To have by customers use our products with peace of mind, ROHM Group continues to engage in the management of substances of environmental concern (SOC).
At our sales locations, which act as the contact point with our overseas customers, with the objective of increasing staff's environmental knowledge, we educate employees on the mechanisms of SOC management and the importance of collaboration with our business partners(suppliers).

Environmental Education for Elementary School Students
ROHM Group has provided environmental education for elementary school students in Kyoto-city from FY 2010. In the education program, we give the opportunities for them to experience the energy-saving effects such as comparing the energy-consumption of LED and miniature bulbs by using a human powered generator besides the lecture about global-warming's mechanism, and energy-saving tips that can be performed at home or school.
ROHM Group will continuously develop these kinds of activities that help children understand the value of global environment.
In 2019, we provided environmental education to 100 students from two different elementary schools, and so far, a total of approximately 1,700 elementary students have received our environmental education.
