Renewable Energy
ROHM Hamamatsu introduced a solar power system in fiscal year 2017 and set up solar panels on the south side of the factory parallel to the Shinkansen Bullet Train tracks for a total length of 270 meters; this power system can generate approximately 363 MWh of electricity annually.
(In 2020, we are planning to introduce renewable energy at our site in Malaysia.)
In fiscal year 2019, we started purchasing electricity from renewable energy sources (hydropower and geothermal) at our site in Fukuoka, and plan to supply 50% of the energy required for operation with renewable energy in 2020.
The factory of SiCrystal GmbH (Germany), which manufactures SiC wafers, has been operating at 100% renewable energy usage rate of 100% since 2021, and the CO₂ emissions from the purchased electricity at this factory are "zero". As a result, the main production process for SiC wafers has become an environmentally friendly production system that utilizes renewable energy.
ROHM Group is furthermore considering the introduction of renewable energy to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and avoid exhausting limited resources.

(3) Reduce Global Greenhouse Gas Emission (PFC's, SF6, and etc.)

PFC gas is a material essential for fine processing of semiconductors, especially Ics. This PFC gas will turn to a greenhouse gas that produces greenhouse effect 6,500 times as high as CO₂ when it is released into the atmosphere. The semiconductor industry has determined a target for reduction in the PFC gas emission and promoted the installation of PFC gas treatment systems used to dissolve PFC gases and eliminate the greenhouse effect.

(2) Water Consumption

ROHM Group manufactures semiconductor wafers that consume large amounts of water at its domestic bases. Ultrapure water used for semiconductor manufacturing is a high-cost resource that treats raw water with ultra-high purity, so it is necessary to not disposable but recycle or reuse for water-saving efforts.
We consider it is obvious that reducing input of limited water is friendly to environment, and reducing risk of business continuity can be possible if water-saving measure works even if water shortage is happen by climate change.

Water Risk Correspondence
The semi-conductor manufacturing process, which is one of ROHM Group's business areas, consists of an upstream process (semi-conductor wafer process) and downstream processes (assembly and final product inspection). The upstream process is located in Japan, and the downstream processes are located in our Southeast Asia, South Korea, and China plants. The manufacture of semi-conductors is an industry that requires the use of large volumes of ultra-pure water. The vast majority of those resources are used in the upstream process. For this reason, securing a long-term, stable supply of water in Japan, where the upstream process is concentrated, is an essential prerequisite for the continuation of operations.
Further, in Southeast Asia, where most of the downstream processes are concentrated, the two plants in Thailand are located in catchments with a high risk of flood and other water damage. From the bitter past experience of having operations disrupted by actual damage from a flood disaster, we conduct risk management from the dual aspects of water shortages and flood risk.

5.Environmental Conservation Efforts in Each Site

・Initiatives for Biodiversity Conservation

We have had a substantial impact on the environment through our business activities. We believe it is essential for us to try to conserve biodiversity in the utilization of resources used for production or emissions resulting from production, and thus we have been conducting cleanup and tree planting activities in each region to protect the ecosystem.
